How to Tell If Your Headphones Are Working Properly: Left and Right Test
One side quieter than the other. Music sounds tilted. Voices seem to come from the wrong direction. These are signs your headphones have a channel balance problem. The issue could be in the drivers, the cable, the jack, or the source device.
A proper left-right test takes less than two minutes and tells you exactly what is wrong.
Why headphones lose balance
Headphones have two drivers, one in each ear. They should produce the same volume at the same frequency. When they don't, you hear imbalance. Common causes:
Physical damage. A drop or impact can push the driver off-center. The diaphragm moves unevenly, producing less output on one side.
Cable damage. The most common failure point is where the cable enters the jack or where it enters the earcup. Bending, twisting, and pulling create internal breaks that reduce signal to one channel.
Debris. Earwax, dust, or lint can partially block one driver. This is especially common with in-ear monitors (IEMs) where the nozzle is small.
Source imbalance. Your phone, laptop, or audio interface might output different levels on left and right. This is rare in modern devices but happens with older hardware or broken headphone jacks.
Driver mismatch. In cheaper headphones, the two drivers may not be closely matched from the factory. This is called driver imbalance and is measured in dB. Anything above 1 dB is noticeable to trained ears.
The 2-minute balance test
Step 1: Play a mono test tone
Generate a 1,000 Hz sine wave. This is the standard reference frequency for audio testing. Listen with both headphones on.
The tone should sound like it is coming from the center of your head, directly between your ears. If it sounds like it is coming from the left or right, you have an imbalance.
Step 2: Check volume
Cover one ear with your hand. Listen to the other side for 5 seconds. Then switch. The volume should be the same on both sides.
If one side is noticeably quieter, the problem is in the headphone, not the source.
Step 3: Check the cable
Gently bend the cable near the jack while playing the test tone. If the volume changes or you hear crackling, the cable has an internal break near the connector.
Move up the cable, bending at different points. The break is wherever the volume changes.
Step 4: Swap sides
Put the left headphone on your right ear and vice versa. If the quiet side follows the headphone (not the ear), the problem is in the headphone. If the quiet side stays on the same ear, the problem might be in your hearing or in the source device.
The frequency sweep test
A balance problem might only show up at certain frequencies. A driver can be balanced at 1,000 Hz but off by 3 dB at 200 Hz.
Step 1: Play a frequency sweep from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
Step 2: Listen for frequency ranges where the balance shifts. Common problem areas:

The phase test
Phase problems are different from balance problems. Two drivers can be the same volume but playing out of phase. This causes a hollow, thin sound and poor bass response.
Step 1: Play a 100 Hz tone (low bass).
Step 2: If the bass sounds weak or hollow, one driver might be wired in reverse polarity.
Step 3: Try a known-good pair of headphones with the same source. If bass is strong with the other headphones, your headphones have a phase issue.
Phase problems are rare in consumer headphones but more common in studio headphones that have been repaired or modified.
Testing your source device
Before assuming your headphones are broken, test the source:
Step 1: Plug in a known-good pair of headphones.
